Mit D. Zisl Slepovitch, Musiker und Musikwissenschaftler
im Begleitprogramm zur Ausstellung »Jiddisch. Jüdisch. Taitsch.«
In 1912, Shimon An-sky set out for the most remote shtetls in the Pale of Settlement – the territory in the Western part of the Russian Empire, where Jews could reside legally – with an Edison’s phonograph on a mission to preserve rare folk tales and songs.
Almost one hundred years later, D. Zisl Slepovitch and Nina Stepanskaya made their own journey, this time with a video camera, on a mission to preserve the disappearing Jewish songs and untold oral history of Eastern European Jewry in the 20th century. The result of this inspiring research is ‘Traveling the Yiddishland’, an ethnographic cine-concert, created and performed by D. Zisl Slepovitch. It is a musical journey across the routes of the Jewish history in the 20th century Eastern and Central Europe, brought to the modern audiences through the original fieldwork videos, art, and live performance.

D. Zisl Slepovitch ist gebürtig aus Minsk, Belarus und lebt seit 2008 in New York. Er ist Musikologe und Ethnomusikologe mit Schwerpunkt jüdische Musik in Osteuropa, Komponist, Klezmer-, Klassik- und Improvisationsmusiker sowie Musik- und Jiddisch-Pädagoge.
Slepovitch ist Gründungsmitglied der in Kritiken gelobten Gruppen Litvakus und Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble, regelmäßiger Gast des National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, Musician-in-Residence im Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies der Yale University sowie Klavierspieler und Musikkoordinator der Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York. Zu Slepovitchs Projekten zählen der Film „Defiance“, das Album „Eternal Echoes“ (Sony Classical), „Rejoice“ mit Itzhak Perlman und Kantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot (PBS) und „Fiddler on the Roof auf Jiddisch“ (off-Broadway).
