Jewish-Feminist Positions
The year 2021 marks “1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany,” with celebrations to take place throughout the year. The Jewish Museum Augsburg Swabia will be letting out its feminine side with the exhibition Shalom Sisters!, a showcase of Jewish-feminist positions both past and present. The exhibition aims to combat clichés and stereotypes by highlighting the historic and present-day diversity of Jewish life. Shalom Sisters! proves once again that feminism is not merely a women’s issue but brings us all closer to living in a just world.
Whether in Orthodox or Liberal Judaism, in Germany, Europe or the rest of the world, Jewish women attempting to reconcile feminist demands with Jewish tradition – rejecting conventions in favor of newer lifestyles – have faced a multitude of challenges and continue to confront obstacles today. With positions from women artists of international standing – Beth Peters, Batsheva Hay, Nina Paley, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Andi Arnovitz and Lisa Frühbeis, just to name a few – and with statements from Jewish superheroines and lesser-known female rebels, this exhibition shows how feminists have grappled with, and continue to grapple with, such questions – artistically, politically and socially.
Shalom Sisters*! will open in five locations across Augsburg on January 13, 2021.
