New in November 2026

After their expulsion from the imperial city of Augsburg between 1438 and 1440, Jews were prohibited from settling permanently in the city for nearly 400 years. During this period, Jewish life in the region developed primarily in rural communities. In Kriegshaber, then a village under Habsburg rule, a significant rural Jewish community emerged.

The guided tour offers insights into the history of the former synagogue and traces the development of Jewish life from the early modern period to its destruction under Nazi rule. Selected examples also provide an introduction to Jewish traditions and customs.

The synagogue complex in the city center has been undergoing gradual renovation since 2022. As a result, the museum’s city-center location will close for several years starting in November 2026. In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you to the former synagogue in the Kriegshaber district of Augsburg, where we continue to offer a diverse program of guided tours and workshops.

ABOUT THE FORMER KRIEGSHABER SYNAGOGUE

The oldest surviving synagogue in Bavarian Swabia served as the center of a significant rural Jewish community just outside Augsburg from the early 18th century through the 20th century. Since 2014, it has been a branch of the Jewish Museum of Augsburg and Swabia. The former synagogue in the Kriegshaber district of Augsburg is easily accessible by tram or bus from the city centre in 20 minutes.
