  • Since summer 2022, the synagogue in the city center has been undergoing renovation.

More than a 110 years since its inauguration and fifty years after its restoration, the entire building complex is in need of renovation. The project, which is scheduled to take several years, encompasses both the synagogue and the community buildings at Halderstrasse 6–8, which house not only the premises of the Jewish Community of Swabia-Augsburg but also the Jewish Museum Augsburg Swabia.

From autumn 2026, the west wing, which houses the museum, is also due to undergo refurbishment. The museum’s city center location will therefore be closed from November 2, 2026 for several years.

  • The restoration gives us the opportunity to completely redesign the permanent exhibition.

The museum and the Great Synagogue will be made accessible to everyone through accessibility measures. Our aim is to create a space where people of all ages can engage with Jewish history and the Jewish present.

Find out how you can support the museum in this endeavour.

  • We currently expect the renovation works to be completed in 2029.

Following the installation of a new permanent exhibition and a new reception area with a museum shop and café, the museum site on Halderstraße will likely reopen in 2030. As before, visitors will then be able to visit the Great Synagogue as well as the new permanent exhibition. Thanks to the installation of elevators during the renovation phase, both the permanent exhibition and the Great Synagogue will be made more accessible. Furthermore a new annex for special exhibitions will be build.

  • On our museum blog, we will keep you regularly updated on the progress of the refurbishment, the museum’s activities in the meantime, and the plans for the reopening.
