Concert for the Liberation Day

The 8th of May marks the anniversary of the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht and thus the end of the Second World War in Europe. At that time, many Germans perceived this day as a day of defeat. However, for those persecuted by the Nazi regime and for prisoners of concentration camps and prisons, it was a day of liberation!

In Augsburg, for the first time, two victim groups of the Nazi regime come together to celebrate the day of the end of the war in Europe with a joint concert. It is the first time that in Augsburg two groups, who were liberated together on May 8, 1945, celebrate this day together: Sinti and Roma as well as Jews.

Under the title “Liberated together” the bands “Nico Franz & das Franz Ensemble” and “Feygele” will play famous and lesser-known songs from the Romani and Jewish traditions. The concert will also be a sign of solidarity and standing together of the different victim groups. The event is unique and offers an opportunity to commemorate the historical events in common memory and solidarity.

Carmen Reichert, Director of the Jewish Museum, Marcella Reinhardt, Chairwoman of the Regional Association of German Sinti and Roma Swabia e.V., and Martina Wild, Second Mayor of the City of Augsburg, will welcome the guests. After the concert, there will be a small drink.

All who wish to join them in remembering and celebrating the end of World War II are cordially invited.
